Abstract: The selection and use of popular music in the clinical setting is the topic which is explored in this paper. There are references to current religions and popular articles about the effects of rock music on behavior, and a challenge to music therapists to begin to formulate some guidelines for the use of popular and rock music in the clinical setting. The article details an example of a policy that was developed in a clinical setting. It gives the rationale and the procedure for writing the policy and tells how the policy was implemented and some of the responses to that implementation. The paper emphasizes the importance of evaluating musical tastes and choices, and of using good judgment in determining appopriate music for therapeutic use.
