Pop lyrics as auto-effect |
Journal/Book: Etc.. 1986; 43: 141-146.
Abstract: Discusses the psychodynamics and meanings of the lyrics to current popular music for individuals. According to K. Burkes, some performers sing of the autoerotic and are caught up in a wider sphere of autoeffect, wherein the conscripted imagery of lyric and bodily gesture are alternately co-opted by the modes of confession and incantation--externalizing the internal and internalizing the external--for the body is an actor. As an actor, the body participates in the movements of the mind, posturing correspondingly.
