Abstract: This paper considers the implications of the Government's policy towards community-based care on the Music Therapy Department of the Mental Handicap Unit, Croydon Health Authority. With the inevitable closure of St. Lawrence's Hospital, it has been necessary to constantly reappraise the role and function of the department, as it adjusts to the changing state and needs of the situation. The paper outlines plans for the development of specialist Therapeutic Core Units and the introduction of more specialised therapy to cater for the needs of a wider variety of client.
