Music therapy-assisted childbirth |

Abstract: The large number of couples currently having children, as well as a heavy competition among health care providers, have created a deman for alternatives and choices in childbirth. Music therapy-assisted childbirth, most recently re-introduced in 1978, has been an attractive and effective birthing option. Many music therapists desire to implement such programs, either in private practice or as part of hospital employment. As a practical guide towards starting a music therapy practice with childbearing parents, this article discusses organizational and marketing strategies; types of practices available; and the types of services which can be provided to the childbearing couple by the music therapist. Practical considerations, such as fees, location of service provision, equipment needed, documentation, and treatment emergencies are discussed. An emphasis is placed on the education of everyone involved: physicians, health care workers, and the general public, regarding the role of the music therapist and the usefulness of the technique.
