The effect of behavioral techniques on participation in a geriatric music/exercise program |
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of music combined with visual/verbal prompts and reinforcement on participation in a music exercise program. Subjects were 22 residents of nursing homes who ranged in age from 67 to 95 years and who were divided into three groups. A multiple baseline design was used with group 1 receiving baseline, reinforcement, prompts; with group 2 receiving baseline, prompts, reinforcement, baseline; with group 3 receiving baseline, prompts and reinforcment. Results were graphed and demonstrated that the addition of visual/verbal prompts to a music exercise program increased participation by an average of 20%. Visual/verbal reinforcement increased participation by an average of 19% in two groups but had no affect above baseline in group 3.
