Mozart's "Magic Flute" as a parable of normal adolescence |
Journal/Book: Journal of Psychoanalytic Anthropology. 1985; 8: 3-9.
Abstract: Proposes that Mozart's opera The Magic Flute can be interpreted as a parable of normal male adolescence in which a boy-child leaves his mother-dominated role as a child by rescuing a maiden and joining the mature brotherhood of men. Interpretations involving archetypes, political allegory, oedipal conflict, and a dream are discussed. It is suggested that the universal theme of growing up accounts for the fascination with the opera.
