Abstract: This paper examines the use of music with terminal patients is a hospice setting, and is based on a group music therapy program begun in 1983. Seven cases are presented. Aims included developing a rapport and creating a comfortable non threatening situation, developing social interaction and self expression through re-use of social skills, listening and expressing concerns for others, encouragement of personal choice and increasing participation in discussion and giving of information about selves in discussion. An increase in social interaction was observed for most patients, along with expression of concern for others, self expression, opportunities for life review etc.
