Structural analysis of clinical music: An important tool for music therapy practice and research |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy: The Journal of the AAMT. 1984; Philadelphia, PA. American Association for Music Therapy P.O. Box 27177 19118 Philadelphia, PA USA. journal article.
Abstract: The hypothesis that the way in which a piece of music is structured can provide insights into its effectiveness in clinical situations is explored through examination of a Nordoff-Robbins play-song, "Something is Going to Happen." Concepts drawn from the analytical approach of the music theorist Heinrich Schenker are used as the basis for a detailed structural analysis of this play-song. Findings from the analysis are then related to the clinical effects of the play-song as reported by Nordoff and Robbins; ways in which aspects of its musical structure may have contributed to these effects are suggested. Implications for clinical practice and future research in music therapy are also discussed.
