Alienation as expressed in three twentieth-century operas |
Journal/Book: Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. 1984; 12: 441-450.
Abstract: Describes how alienation is expressed in Die Frau Ohne Schatten, Bluebeard's Castle, and Peter Grimes. These operas represent alienation from the self, the significant other, and the community, respectively. In Die Frau Ohne Schatten, the integration of the Empress's personality allows her to bring others together. In Bluebeard's Castle, the title character cannot achieve fulfillment because of his inability to relate to the other. Peter Grimes is portrayed as a misfit whose uncompromising independence and unwillingness to accept help bring him to destruction. (3 ref)
