Abstract: This paper points out the evident lack of psychoanalytical iterature on the topic of "music". Freud's "inability to enjoy music" is discussed as an example of defence against primary process. The root of human musicality is seen to be located in the very early emotional dialogue taking place between the mother and the child. The "babbling" between mother and child shows an orderly, smooth and differentiated dialogical structure. Disturbances in this dialogue are seen as the root of disturbances in the identity and in the possibility to relate. In the last section of the paper it is shown that the mother-child dialogue is analogous to the music therapeutic dialogue. The treatment techniques of music therapy should hence be similar to the behaviour of a healthy mother. It is pointed out that this nonverbal technique has a unique and independand position in psychotherapy.
