Abstract: Discusses cross-cultural aspects of psychotherapy, with reference to historical theories of art, symbols, and myth and to the therapist working with the client. An art-therapy perspective is presented, based on the author's work with cultural groups from numerous countries. A review of the literature focuses on cross-cultural psychology, defining issues applicable to art therapy. Psychotherapy practice and training, cultural differences in therapeutic methods, research on cross-cultural mental health, and universal and personal symbols are described. (39 ref)
