"Frankie says Relax"

Abstract: This paper examines a primary role of music in the therapeutic relation; its role to relax people. A positive definition of relaxation is given: "to achieve a state of restfulness or calm which can enable action and communication" and arguments are offered to support the proposition that music can function in this way. Three brief case studies in music therapy follow forr illustration. The paper concludes by suggesting that although relaxation is not the only role for music in therapy, it is one of the earliest and most important. This paper can be purchased from the BSMT.
