The use of music in a group sensory training program for regressed geriatric patients |
Journal/Book: Activities, Adaptation and Aging. 1983; 4: 49-62.
Abstract: Investigated the effectiveness of a music-based sensory training program in improving environmental awareness, activity participation level, reality orientation, and attitude of 22 regressed geriatric patients. Ss were randomly assigned to experimental (mean age 80.5 yrs) or control (mean age 83.3 yrs) groups and were assessed through measures including the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Mental Status Questionnaire at the beginning, middle, and end of the treatment program. Experimental Ss attended 2 30-min group sessions weekly for 16 wks. Controls received no treatment. A mixed-effects ANOVA was conducted for each dependent variable, and in all 4 cases a significant interaction was found between Groups and Treatment Conditions. The control group remained the same across trials, while the experimental group showed marked improvement. (22 ref)
