Abstract: Describes the interaction between music and self-understanding in the life and work of the contemporary German composer, Peter Michael Hamel, whose early experience with self-exploration and psychotherapy has found expression in his music. The experiential origins and effects of musical composition are illustrated via biographical material and examples of the composer's work, with particular emphasis on musical creation as a means of coming to terms with grief and pain and dealing with the darker sides of one's self.
