Abstract: Discusses the effects of music on the listener and the use of music in traditional healing rituals. The principles of music therapy are outlined, and its applications are considered in the treatment of such problems as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, physical disabilities, and behavioral disorders. It is concluded that music therapy may prove to be valuable as an alternative treatment or as an adjunct to standard forms of therapy. (23 ref)
