Abstract: Discusses an analytical technique that uses modulation of sound and interpersonal distance to control the atmosphere of communication between analyst and patient. It is suggested that this technique allows the analyst to choose between the language of unsure rumination that expresses exploratory thought (interpretative activity) and the language involved in the presentation of metapsychological formulations (interpretation). The present author considers language as something that moves at different levels. The roots of the deep level are musical and communicate moods by the mechanism of projective identification. A superficial lexicological level expresses the outer world; a poetical function joins the other 2 levels. The purpose of the technique is to modulate the interaction of these 3 levels and to create a situation in which the process of transference can develop. Sound elements (i.e., musical tone, rhythm, key, volume) are dealt by controlling the voice's emotiveness and the intenseness of communication; interpersonal distance is controlled through the use of different levels of vocabulary, refinement, and images according to the part of the patient to whom interpretation is addressed. Clinical materials are used to illustrate the technique.
