The talent show: Meeting the needs of the healthy elderly |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1983; 3: 82-93.
Abstract: Describes the use of a talent show format to meet the needs of the healthy elderly--those elderly people who remain healthy, active and productive, but whose emotional and psychological stability may be threatened by the aging process. The role of music therapy in a senior activity center, the evolution of the talent show, and the group process dynamics involved in the development of the talent show are outlined. Therapeutic benefits of participation in the talent show, which involve improved self-concepts and qualities of endurance, orderliness, and continuity derived from viewing the show as a ritual, are detailed. Case vignettes illustrating other therapeutic benefits are presented. (9 ref)
