Rhythm responses in emotionally disturbed children with differing needs for external structure |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1983; 3: 94-102.
Abstract: Examined whether 17 male and 7 female emotionally disturbed children (aged 11-15 yrs) with varying needs for external structure to control behavior had differing success rates on a rhythmic imitation task. Judges viewed videotapes to determine whether Ss correctly imitated 40 congo drum rhythm patterns presented on audiotape. Results show that Ss in various structure need groups did not significantly differ in motor coordination scores and Musical Aptitude Profile (Tempo subtest) scores. Although Ss' rhythmic imitation responses did not significantly differ according to age and gender, Ss in the mild need for structure group performed significantly better than Ss in the moderate and severe need for structure groups. It is suggested that rhythm may be an important and useful element to consider in assessment, evaluation, and subsequent music therapy plans for emotionally disturbed children in this age range.
