Toscanini's relation to his orchestra |
Journal/Book: Hillside Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. 1983; 5: 91-127.
Abstract: Contends that Toscanini and his orchestra were knit into a union in which Toscanini was both more self-absorbed and more dependent. His gifts gave him total identification with the composers and allowed him the belief that the pursuit of truth would lead to a validation of his vision. Players gave up self-regulation in favor of merger into the larger unity envisioned by the conductor. Yielding to him was nurturing him, and players knew they were the source of his gratification and more important to him than anyone else in his life. (59 ref)
