Abstract: Since 1974 Laser (Abbreviation for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) was applied within medicine in a totally new way, that is for stimulus therapy. lt can be used in body-, scalp- and ear-acupuncture instead of needles. Important for the understanding are the characteristics of Laser: Monochromasy, coherence, little divergence of light. The Laserbeam used for therapeutic purpose is produced in a cell filled with gaz, mostly Helium and Neon. The output of stimulus Laser-machines has a range from 0,5-6 mWs. The optimal biological penetration in human beings was found to be at a wave-length between 600 and 1000 nm. Most Laserapparatus' use one of 632 and 905 nm. Laser therapy is absolutely painfree and aseptic. Therapeutic worth of Laser is limited by the low output, therefore it cannot be helpful for indications of strong stimulation and anesthesia. According to controlled clinical studies up to date Laser stimulation seems not to have a comparable therapeutic effect like needle therapy. For the medical doctor, who is treating with acupuncture, Laser can be an additional tool of his therapeutic spectrum especially for sensitive persons and children.
