Abstract: This paper is not concerned with the pedagogy of singing instruction. It is concerned with the love of singing, which many adult psychiatric patients profess, be utilized effectively as a rehabilitative medium. In the author's view, vocal instruction as a psychiatric music therapy technique can best be understood within an evolutionary framework. The first part of the paper will present some of the salient themes of vocal development as they relate to biological and psychological adaptational phenomena; the second part will compare the higher forms of vocal commuication and their relation to cerebral organization; the third part will discuss the clinical applications of singing instruction in actual practice.
