Abstract: Traces the establishment of psychology as an autonomous discipline in 19th-century Italy, focusing on the work of Giovanni-Maria Linguiti (1773-1825). Linguiti founded an asylum near Naples and repudiated the brutal treatment of the mentally ill common in his time. He espoused Pinel's humane and enlightened therapeutic methods and was a precursor of such modern techniques as music therapy and psychodrama. Linguiti theorized on the role of the imagination in mental disorders and their treatment, and he was a pioneer in conceptualizing psychological, biological, and physiological factors in the pathogenesis of mental illness.
