Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1982; Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. National Association for Music Therapy 8455 Colesville Rd., Suite 930 20910 Silver Spring, Maryland USA. journal article.
Abstract: Recent articles in the music therapy literature reported that music therapists frequently used groups as an interventive modality in their work. This reflects a trend away from the exclusive use of individual treatment found throughout the therapeutic professions. What has not been explored in the literature is the contribution music therapists can make to group development and programming. In order to make a valuable contribution, a familiarity with the literature in group theory and practice is necessary. This paper reviews the hisotry of the use of groups as an interventive model, the phases of group development, and how music therapists can serve as effective facilitators of group process. Continued research in the use of music in group therapy is recommended, both for scholarly and pragmattic reasons.
