Abstract: Discusses group meetings of about 12 regressed schizophrenics who gathered weekly and were led by a nurse in singing, music, concentration, and relaxation exercises. Findings suggest that this kind of therapy offers even autistic and negative Ss an opportunity to experience intensive collective involvement and to contact others while finding self-identity. Emotional engagement of Ss could not be predicted, but enforcement of the ego took place. More than half of the Ss who took part in the groups were subsequently able to engage in simple work outside the hospital; half of this group have been living in the community for over 3 yrs. Although it is difficult to quantify the effect of the group therapy, success with Ss who had failed in conventional therapies suggests the value of group dynamics with schizophrenics. (40 ref)
