Abstract: While adolescents want the analyst as an ally in their struggle with their parents for identity, children in the latentÔà,Â–-Â–-Â–-ÂÂÔperiod seek to keep the analyst at a distance, and young children bring "their unconscious in their hand." Adolescents use ideas and professional and sexual identities to approach analysts, who may reach them through music, books, or films. Belonging to a family has enormous significance; contradictory family voices and expectations are heard from analysands, who may treat the analyst as an indulgent family parent, while parents may impede an analysis they cannot control.
