Musical talent - Possibilities for musical training at pre-school age

Journal/Book: Musiktherapeutische Umschau. 1982; 3: Stuttgart. G. Fischer Verlag. 81-97.

Abstract: Every child is entitled to have its musical talents trained, regardless of what state of their development is visible. But only children from music-minded families enjoy this training. From their own lack of musical education, most parents will not be able to give their children the necessary stimulating musical environment, nor will they be able to recognize signs of musical promise in their children. The institutions of pre-school education must provide an antidote to the accoustical pollution in home and surroundings by teaching the children to listen to music consciously, thus taking part in the effort to prevent addiction to music as a drug. Music education promotes not only the musical talents of a child, but also its intellectual, emotional and social faculties. The possibilities for non-verbal communication and self-expression which music offers to lingually deprived children are of the highest value. The group teacher is best suited for this work, though he is not as a rule a specialist in music. The possibilities for training musical talent is pre-school education are demonstrated and analysed in three examples.
