Interaction of ricin-sensitive and ricin- resistant cell lines with other carbohydrate- binding toxins

Journal/Book: FEBS-Letters 141 (1), 14-18. 1982;

Abstract: This study reports on the sensitivity of ricin-resistant cell lines tothe cytotoxicity of a newly described lectin of the common mistletoeViscum album and modeccin, the toxic principle of Adenia digitata, anAfrican plant. These lectins, like ricin, recognise galactose residuesof glycoproteins. Also studied are the effects of diphtheria toxin onthese cells. Diphtheria toxin is believed to bind to cell surfaceglycoproteins possibly carrying N-glycans of the oligomannosidic type,the synthesis of which is hardly affected in mutants selected forresistance to ricin. It is shown that cell lines derived from differentspecies and tissue origins differ markedly in their sensitivity to thegalactose-binding lectins.COPYRIGHT BY Elsevier Science BV, Amsterdam, Netherlands END OF DOCUMENT
