Historical controls, data banks and randomized trials in clinical research: a review

Abstract: A brief review is presented of the strengths and weaknesses of historical controls, data banks, and randomized trials in the evaluation of clinical treatment. Use of prerandomized versus postrandomized informed consent is discussed. Recommendations are made for the development of an appropriate clinical research strategy.
