Body image stress in neutral mask work

Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1981; 8: 37-41.

Abstract: Part of a professional training program for actors is movement training, and one portion of that training involves neutral mask work--placing a mask with a neutral expression on the student and asking him/her to physically respond to various images while being observed by other students and the teacher. In the course of conducting such training sessions the author has noted 3 common types of body image stress: (1) change in breathing patterns or quality, (2) displacement of body feeling in specific body parts, and (3) cognitive disruption. Reasons why the mask should result in such changes and stress are briefly discussed and include the association of the ego with the face, the use of the face in communication, the use of the face to cover up real feelings, and self-consciousness concerning the movements of the rest of the body.
