Musical Shape and Form in Dreams

Abstract: Among the most frequent occurrences of musical shape and form in dreams we find not only man himself singing and making music, and music instruments, but also the wide range of forms of musical composition. The musical content of dreams originates, on the one hand, in the preconscious archaic depths of the mind which from the very earliest times have enabled man to invent musical forms and construct musical instruments. It comes, on the other hand, from the varying individual musical experiences a person has in the course of his life. Often, the unconscious attempts by means of a dream to restore and enrich the consciousness of the dreamer, encouraging it to make contact with the creative and formative power latent in the dreamer's own mind, a power which is closely related in dynamic terms to what is taking place musically.
