Abstract: This article describes music therapy in Austria with children and adolescents in care who have been badly neglected, referred through the juvenile courts, or who are 'backward'. It describes a systematic approach to small group music therapy using a 'creative music-making approach. The aim of the work described is to encourage progress in specific areas and to further overall development primarily through musical games and active sound/movement exercises. The most important goals and benefits are: Improved concentration; Extension of concentration span - cognitive development; Development of ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally; Better social awareness - tolerance for the activities of others; To become active and creative.
