Music Therapy or Music Pedagogy in Special Schools

Abstract: Determining the theoretical basis of therapy and pedagogy against the background of a relevant synthesis of the human sciences is regarded as a prerequisite of the establishing of models for music therapy and music pedagogy. The marking out of a common field of reference with regard to the concept of man as well as of disease and disability is seen as a precondition of position finding and clarification of terms. The therapy system, its aims and action principles are demonstrated with reference to C. SCHWABE's "Methodik der Musiktherapie und deren theoretische Grundlagen" (Methods of Music Therapy and their Theoretical Basis) and critically compared with the subjects, aims and procedures of general therapy and pedogogy. The discussion of whether therapy and/or pedagogy should be employed in special schools is examined in relation to the social situation and to pedagogic practice in education; its problems and the differing mandates of therapy and pedagogy are exposed. Proposals for integration are discussed, subject to the limits imposed by questions of legel competence and necessary qualification.
