Art therapy and cultural difference

Abstract: Describes the present author's experience in art therapy sessions with a Native American female psychiatric inpatient, whose diagnosis was based on assumptions that took no account of S's cultural background. Research into the Native American cultural values and background enabled an enriched understanding of S's compositions, which were initially thought of as impoverished and incongruent with instructions.
