Bartók had emigrated to America in 1940, he developed a relapsing myelocytic leukemia while in New York, which was accompanied by joint complaints and pyrexia. Bartók, now reduced to a skeleton, fell a victim of pneumonia in 1945. In spite of blood transfusions and oxygen respiration he succumbed to his condition on 26th September 1945 at the age of 64.
