Examination of cerebral mechanisms in music processing |
Journal/Book: Musiktherapeutische Umschau. 1980; 1: STUTTGART. G. Fischer Verlag. 123-140.
Abstract: After having pointed out the dependance of music therapy successes on basic natural science research, the author describes the path of music from the receiving organ, the ear, up to the areas within the brain which are responsible for the processing and making conscious of musical phenomena. The possible cerebral mechanisms of learning, remembrance and memory are demonstrated with regard to the processing of music. In the second part the author points out the importance of unspecified auditory nerves for the cerebral analysis. considerable value is attached to the ARS, the limbic system and especially to the hypothalamus as a switchboard between central nervous and hormonal regulation. First preliminary tests were started to verify the hypothesis that the influence of music can also be measured in the form of characteristic releases of hormone from the pituitary gland. The outcome of these tests can be a further step helping to explain the different influence of different music on different people.
