Abstract: Thirty chronic institionalized subjects serving as their own controls were tested individually under each of three conditions in a paired-associate learning task: synthesized sounds, nonsense syllables, and rhythmic sounds. The learning phase of the experiment consisted of subjects learning the stimulus (synthesized sounds, etc.) with the response (i,e,m pictures of familiar objects) followed by the testing phase. In this phase, subjects were asked to name the corresponding response picture after hearing only the stimulus. The learning and testing phase of each condition alternated until subjects met the criterion of one perfect trial or reached a total of ten trials. Subjects consistently ranked the condition of synthesized sounds as being easier to associate with objects in a paired-associate learning task than the rhythmic pattern condition. A two-way analysis of variance showed significant differences among the three conditions.
