L'elaboration culturelle de la crise sociale a travers le cinema: propositions d'analyse. (Cultural elaboration of social crises through film: Proposals for analysis.) |

Abstract: Analyzed 2 major categories of films to illustrate how social crises are expressed through the cinema. The categories are expressed through (a) the American film industry's reaction to McCarthyism, which is directly traceable to 2 popular trends in films today, namely, the musical comedy and the burlesque show, both of which exploit a maniacal side against external reality, and the science fiction film that plays on the paranoid side of fantasy; and (b) showcase Japanese films that have been produced as a reaction of a culture to nuclear trauma. Specific films are discussed under each category. The conclusions drawn, which reflect relationships between culture and environment, are presented in terms of D. W. Winnicott's (1949, 1971) constructs of transitional objects and transitional space. (25 ref)
