Music in dreams

Abstract: With the question of the meaning of music in dreams a research area is brought to the fore which until now presented far-reaching psychological and music-therapeutical new ground, the closer consideration of which is not only worthwhile for dream interpretation in practical psychotherapy, but also for the basic research of music therapy. The examples which are reported here are taken from the author's collection of over 700 dreams with musical contents. They are gathered from colleagues and circles all over the world, also from people who were not analysed as well as from the psychotherapeutic and musictherapeutic practice of the author. Musical contents in dreams come as well from the practical areas of music as also from primeval music concepts and structures hidden in the unconscious of the human psyche. Music often appears in dreams as a kind of therapeutic agent of the psyche. The unconscious of the man of today refers back to the ancient music-therapeutic experience of mankind, when it uses music as a harmonic equalizing, balancing stimulation or calming quality and as a communication medium of the first order, to help eliminate disturbances of many kinds.
