Abstract: Part 1 discusses general aspects of musical phenomena. Music is seen as highly symbolic because of its ambiguity and simultaneity of elements. It influences the ego's cognitive style and dissociative and integrative functions. Part 2 refers to the affective nature of music. Music releases libidinal energy (mainly through rhythm) and gives expression to life. Part 3 refers to structural and functional aspects of music. It addresses the role of music to the listener and to the creative musician and presents an analogy between the structure of music and dreams. (19 ref)
