Group dynamics of dependency and counter-dependency manifested in drawings of graduate art, movement, and music therapy students |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1980; 7: 87-96.
Abstract: Collected weekly, spontaneous drawings from 12 art therapy, 11 dance therapy, and 7 music therapy students between the ages of 22 and 35 yrs over a 10-wk period. The drawings from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10 wks were coded and scored for high defensiveness (realistic images) and low defensiveness (symbolic images). It was hypothesized that art therapy Ss would be more defensive (i.e., counter-dependent) than music and dance therapy Ss. Art therapy Ss produced significantly more realistic images than the others, supporting the hypothesis and demonstrating the usefulness of spontaneous drawings as an indicator of group dynamics.
