Clinical issues and implications in creative arts therapy with retarded adults |
Journal/Book: Pratt Institute Creative Arts Therapy Review. 1980; 1: 25-30.
Abstract: Contends that creative self-expression transcends the limitations of mental retardation and is a natural medium for communication beyond the intellectual and verbal. Some clinical issues in treating this population are discussed: (1) the clarification of and differences between occupational and art therapy, the necessity for both, and the separateness of each; (2) the depiction of retarded adults as children; and (3) ways of dealing with sex and sexuality of retarded adults. Two case examples are presented. (4 ref)
