The creative arts therapies: An overview

Abstract: Provides a basic overview for mental health professionals of the therapies of art, dance, drama, and music. The need for integrating these therapies into the individual treatment plan is emphasized. Included are portions of presentations from a national conference that discussed applications, advances, and research in each of the 4 disciplines. The advantages cited include (a) facilitating the uncovering and expression of material that will contribute to a coordinated psychotherapeutic process, (b) encouraging group interactions, (c) enhancing self-esteem, and (d) stimulating participation in ego-building activities. The advances made by the creative arts therapies in attaining professional status are discussed, as well as funding problems with these types of therapy. Their usefulness for under-served groups is discussed with particular emphasis on children and adolescents, ethnic minorities, and the chronically ill.
