Gustav Mahler Um Mitternacht

Abstract: Attempts, through the analytic study of Um Mitternacht, to gain some insight into the mental life of G. Mahler at a point that was pivotal in both his private life and work, and thereby illuminate both biography and music. This song is subjected to analysis musically and psychoanalytically in its biographical context. In its realization are reflected elements of past memory and conflict; the concerns of his middle life; and his anxieties for the future, in particular, the imminent threat of death.
