Abstract: The music therapist emerges from our survey as a specialist who, working with a team of therapists, makes use of psychotherapeutic methods and aims and can deal with a wide variety of psychic deviations. The striking disproportion between supply and demand for trained music therapists has often resulted in the employment of "lay music therapists", which may involve a risk to patients particularly. Responsible therapeutic activity in the field of music therapy in only possible after intensive training on a scientific and practical basis. One of the consequences of our survey among experts appears to be to meet the need for trained music therapists and to compile soundly based training criteria.
