Abstract: The effect of acupuncture and ear-acupuncture on functional disorders of the adrenal cortex and the pituitary gland was investigated in two pilot-studies.The first study shows the response of the pituitary gland to electrically stimulated ear-acupuncture. 13 women, between 1 7 and 26-years-old, with intermittent or secondary amenorrhea participated; 6 of them were involved in a blindtest by receiving the socalled "placebo-acupuncture". The concentration of LH (luteinizing hormone) in the serum before, during, and after acupuncture and also during a LH-RH-test was taken as a comparable parameter. A significant decrease (p<0,005) of LH-concentration was found after earacupuncture. The clinical efficiency of the method in such cases could be explained as a rebound-phenomenon.In the second study, the reaction of the adrenal cortex to acupuncture was investigated on 15 pregnant women within the 35th and 38 th week of gestation. We used the points GV 13, GV 13a, GV 4, B 23 and B 47. The urinary excretion of 17-OH- and 1 7-Ketosteroids before and after acupuncture was analysed. Low initial values increased and high initial values decreased after treatment, which pointed out the regulating effect of acupuncture.
