The dance of development: An alternate approach--a response to strange bedfellows or cohabitants |
Journal/Book: Journal of Employment Counseling. 1978; 15: 113-116.
Abstract: With regard to H. W. Trimmer's (see PA, Vol 63:4007), discussion of the relation between counseling and psychotherapy, the present author develops a model that focuses on the intensity of the intimacy involved in the helping relationships of guidance, counseling, and psychotherapy. The model depicts how the 3 processes are complementary and suggests that they are similar, opposite, and unique. Confusion results when a characteristic is thought of as the exclusive property of a given phenomenon. The 3 fields are seen as being constructed of the same building materials but having different patterns or configurations of variables. In the "dance of development," the 3 areas are similar movements in the choreography of similar music, but differ in the style of holding the partner (the helpee). (12 ref)
