Music therapy for retarded adults with psychotic overlay: A day treatment approach |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1978; 15: 199-207.
Abstract: As a result of 1975 legislation in Wisconsin, virtually all of the retarded adults in Milwaukee County have been returned to the community. To help relieve the social and emotional stresses they experience as a result of reintegration, a day hospital treatment program has been initiated in which music therapy plays an active part. Group music therapy is a nonthreatening experience and develops a number of important skills. It also enables symptoms to be monitored, lends itself to reinforcement techniques, and builds confidence and self-esteem. Three 1-hr sessions a week are held, divided into 15-min sessions given to group movement, discussion (introduced and reinforced musically) of acceptable behavior, use of instruments, and singing. The musical materials, which are specially composed for the group, are short, concrete, easy to learn, and designed to enhance awareness. Opportunities are given for independent decision-making, creative expression, and leadership. Psychotic symptoms during the session are treated as in any other psychiatric setting. The music therapist must create a warm environment, emphasize successful experience, set limits, direct and redirect attention, and be aware of interactions. (10 ref)
