Pain rehabilitation and music therapy |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1978; 15: 162-178.
Abstract: The literature on pain behavior is briefly reviewed, and the Pain Rehabilitation Program of the Golden Valley Health Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, is described. The 2 program goals are to improve muscle tone in pain sufferers by encouraging them to increase their physical exercise and to decrease the number of their complaints (negative verbalizations) about pain. Music accompanies group exercises and group discussions, and social reinforcement is given for increased activity and increased positive verbalizations. Results are presented in terms of the case histories of 2 women. There are manifold possibilities for research in auditory analgesia, and several of these are suggested. (34 ref)
