The healing roles of the arts: II. An agenda for action

Abstract: Presents a paper given by the executive director of Hospital Audiences, Inc., in a panel discussion held at the 1977 convention of the American Art Therapy Association. Through federal legislation, 5,200 artists are employed to bring entertainment to hospitals, although therapy is not involved. An all-day symposium on the arts therapies and rehabilitation efforts, held at the Rockefeller Foundation in 1976, is described. The nature of these therapies, of the therapists, and of their place in the healing arts is outlined. An agenda for action by art therapists to mount a national advocacy effort is presented. The 3 areas with the highest priorities were (a) the need for advocacy; (b) basic research, evaluation, and development; and (c) the need to gather basic information.
