Musical therapy

Journal/Book: Spring. 1978; 128-135.

Abstract: Distinguishes between music therapy (the use of music in psychotherapy) and musical therapy (listening to the music of the soul, which may be silent). Harmony, dissonance, and overtones are discussed as movements and experiences of the psyche. Without the energizing effect of dissonance, music is bland. Ficino's concepts about temperament and the corrective effects of particular types of music are reviewed, and R. Fludd's ideas about different "octaves" of the person are discussed. The musical therapist is one who hears the subtle tones linking body and soul, understands psychological and spiritual overtones, appreciates dissonance, and recognizes the soul's tuning. (8 ref)
